Impetigo on a child's mouth

Impetigo

Impetigo is a skin infection caused by bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pyogenes. It is characterized by the appearance of small blisters that burst and form crusts with a golden or yellowish color. These honey-colored crusts are the main feature of the disease.

The infection is highly contagious, primarily through direct contact with infected skin or with objects that have come into contact with the sores, such as towels, clothes and bedding. It primarily affects children, but can also affect people of all ages.

Causes and transmission

Impetigo is caused by bacteria that enter the skin through minor cuts or abrasions. Transmission occurs easily when infected individuals come into contact with others or share common items. It can spread rapidly in environments where many people gather, such as schools, daycare centers or sports facilities.

Symptoms

  • Small blisters or pustules that fill with fluid and burst quickly.
  • Open sores that form crusts with a golden or brownish hue.
  • Redness and swelling around the infected area.
  • A burning or itching sensation in the affected area.
  • In more severe cases, fever or fatigue may occur.

Diagnosis and treatment

Diagnosis is usually made through a clinical examination of the skin by a dermatologist.

Treatment includes:

  • Antibiotics: In most cases, topical antibiotic ointment is sufficient for mild cases. For more extensive cases, systemic antibiotic therapy may be required.
  • Good hygiene: It is important to keep the affected area clean and use antiseptic products.
  • Avoid scratching: Avoid scratching or touching the lessions, as this can reduce the spread of the infection to other parts of the body or to other people.

Prevention

To prevent the transmission or occurrence of the infection, follow these measures:

  • Wash hands frequently with soap and water.
  • Do not touch or scratch the sores, as this can spread the infection.
  • Avoid direct contact with people who have sores.
  • Wash clothes, bedding and towels at high temperatures and dry them thoroughly in the sun.
  • Cover the sores with clean gauze or bandages to limit the spread of the infection.
